ROYAL INFLUENCE The women of the royal family have long expressed themselves through their choice of clothing – their sartorial choices affect how we see them, and how we dress ourselves
By Catriona Gray for the Walpole Yearbook
In this feature, I wanted to show the influence that the female members of the British royal family have had on fashion trends. While it mostly focused on the current generation of young royals – the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex – the piece also explored the wider tradition of this phenomenon, which can be traced back for centuries. Whether it was Princess Diana and her pie-crust collars, or the Queen’s wedding dress, there’s nothing like a royal seal of approval to set a trend in motion. This feature was commissioned by Walpole for their yearbook – as they represent and champion British luxury brands, many of which are worn regularly by the royal family, this seemed like the perfect fit.
